Student demonstrates very little understanding of English, has limited verbal expression and relies upon visual cues, simple individual words and a few basic sentences. He/She makes significant errors when speaking. Students at this level may or may not read in English, but have many problems with comprehension. They have little ability to write in English. Their limited ability in the language also makes prolonged listening impossible.

Level 1 content overview

Level 2: Elementary

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. For example very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, hobbies and studies/ employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need. Can read and simple sentences and can write these too though often with numerous errors.

• Introduces narrative storytelling, while maintaining a focus on conversational English.
• Uses grammar in natural settings of communication.
• Develops the four key skills of English language learning.

Level 3: Breakthrough

Students at this level have a basic command of the language needed in a range of familiar situations. They can understand and pass on simple messages.  However, speaking and listening is still largely dependent on the other person talking slowly and being prepared to help. Can describe in detail many different things, but continues to make numerous mistakes. However, they usually manage to get their message across verbally or in writing.

Level 3 content overview

• Builds confidence in conversational English.
• Introduces group work and discussion by encouraging students to formulate and support their ideas.
• Expands vocabulary in natural communication settings.

Level 4: Pre-Intermediate

A student at this level can participate in social activities, constantly adding to his/her vocabulary and gaining in cultural knowledge.  This student’s English is changing rapidly at this point, and he/she should now be gaining in confidence. His/her speech still exhibits a considerable accent but grammar and vocabulary errors should be receding quickly.  Writing is also improving and the student should start to be more adventurous with their writing at this stage.

• Develops the art of discussion.
• Integrates the 4 skills and grammar into meaningful communication.

Level 5: Intermediate

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken well. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe – verbally or in writing – past events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Level 5 content overview

• Builds confidence and fluency in conversation and discussion.
• Introduces note-taking during lectures.
• Develops Critical Thinking Skills through problem-solving and other group activities.

Level 6: Upper Intermediate

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Level 6 content overview

• Teaches students to write integrated essays and comparative essays on a variety of topics.
• Teaches writing a covering letter for a job application.
• Teaches letter and email writing, with appropriate levels of formality.

Level 7: Advanced

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Level 7 content overview

• Adds hundreds of new words to an already extensive vocabulary.
• Adds dozens of idioms and phrasal verbs.
• Introduces academic essay writing.
